Bloggers stage protest

Commenting on the rally to protest against the new government licensing rules, which was held at the Speakers’ Corner at Hong Lim Park on Saturday, Academic Director of SMU Executive Development Dr Michael Netzley said that he did not believe that the event resonated with the general public. Dr Netzley said: “This (latest) issue does not have the reach within the Singapore populace and is not likely to be perceived as something that hits the wallet like earlier issues.” He also thinks that “Facebook Activism” will have “little impact beyond awareness”. SMU Assistant Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan shared that he sees it differently and said, “What we will see is the conscious attempt to impress upon Singaporeans that the new licensing requirements will be detrimental to all. Just like the Population White Paper protest, enough people will be moved by the #FreeMyInternet message. The Internet, like immigration issues, plays a big role in our lives.”
