Singapore Institute of Legal Education to review list of Overseas Scheduled Universities regularly

The 4th Committee on the Supply of Lawyers has put forth several recommendations to increase the supply of lawyers in Singapore. In particular, the Singapore Institute of Legal Education will review and update its list of recognised foreign universities every five years to ensure that all the universities are up to standard. The committee also suggested that the two law schools here better prepare their students for the realities of the industry. On the proposed third law school, the committee highlighted that it must not become an inferior pathways for students to join the profession. SMU School of Law Dean Professor Yeo Tiong Min said that all three schools would ensure the quality of its graduates, and none of the schools will become a “second-class” one. He highlighted that the schools are likely to differentiate themselves through research and education focus. NUS Law Dean Professor Simon Chesterman said that the third law school should be set up to attract more talents to practice community law.
