Scholars discuss Town Council Review report; although arrangement has political overtones, management by MPs will be more flexible

On the AIM review performed by MND which suggested letting MPs manage town councils, SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan said that it is inevitable that town councils have political overtones as it is important to remind voters that that their vote directly impacts town council management. By letting MPs control town councils, it would be like running a “local Government.” Hence, it was important to reduce the possibility of such a role being politicised during a change of political party in that area. Therefore, all the procedures should be clearly spelt out, especially in terms of accounts, computer software and manpower.
