Six IHLs can tap into S$1.9 million fund by Government to nurture volunteerism

Students at SMU, NUS, NAP, NYP, SP and RP will be given more money and help to work on community projects and research. The National Youth Council (NYC) will pump in $1.9 million to support students through partnerships with their schools, said Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong on Tuesday. Mr Wong hopes that such efforts will change the youth’s perception that grades are the only route to success. The initiative aims to encourage polytechnic and university students to remain engaged in the community after they graduate. Mr Wong also hopes that more IHLs will be attracted to join this programme. With this new initiative, the Council will provide the framework for youth to design their own projects. Mr Wong also revealed that NYC was in talks with MOE to integrate volunteerism into school curriculum.
