NSP elects new CEC: Tan Chee Kien makes way for the new generation of leaders

NSP has elected a new team of leaders to take the party forward to the next general election. While its top leaders remain unchanged, there has been a slight refreshing of ranks among the 13 members of the central executive committee (CEC) - the party's decision-making body. Most significantly, NSP founding member Tan Chee Kien is not on the new list of council members. SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan pointed out that NSP’s leadership renewal is a good sign for the next election. Tan Chee Kien has not taken part in elections for many years, and being on the CEC implies a possibility of being fielded in the coming elections. Going forward, voters aged between 20 and 40 will be the majority of the electorate and hence contestants will have to be renewed. Assistant Prof Tan also pointed out that younger candidates such as Nicole Seah, Hazel Poa and Tony Tan performed well in the last elections, indicating that the younger voters are willing to support NSP. He also shared that the new CEC indicates the importance the party places on younger voters and is a way of preparing for the next election.
