Identify Taiwan’s competitive edge in order to save its economy

Everyone in Taiwan is debating about Taiwan’s ‘stuffy’ economy. SMU Adjunct Faculty Kang Jung Pao commented that Taiwan has always been strong in manufacturing, however, the rise and fall of Apple products, the global financial storm and the slowdown of the China economy, have caused panic in Taiwan’s property market and in Taiwan’s economy.  With the depreciation of the Japanese yen, Taiwan has also lost its opportunity to adopt a depreciation policy. In order to rejuvenate the Taiwan economy, the country should capitalise on its global competitiveness, and target to be a spring-board for corporations from places like Europe, Southeast Asia, Japan to develop their businesses in China. This will differentiate Taiwan from countries like Hong Kong and Singapore, which position themselves as Asia’s financial hubs.
