Eugene Tan stands out for asking the most questions and raising constructive topics for discussion in Parliament

Since he became a NMP last February, SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan has stood out in Parliament debates for asking the most questions and raising many good topics worth discussing, especially during the Budget Committee of Supply debate this year. Although he is from a tertiary institution, Assistant Prof Tan does not consider himself a representative of local tertiary institutions alone and has covered a wide range of topics in Parliament including politics, immigration and transportation, among others. He said that he has been able to better share his experiences in the teaching of the module Constitutional and Administrative Law as a result of this exposure. He is particularly concerned that more than half the tenured professors in local universities are foreigners. In fact, he has urged MOE to train academics for positions in the higher education sector in Singapore. He clarified that he did not want local academics to get preferential treatment, but wanted to see more equitable treatment for local academics in Singaporean universities.
