At an Islamic finance event at SMU on Wednesday, the panellists said that the shortage of Islamic financial products, not demand, was inhibiting the growth of Islamic banking and finance in Singapore. They agreed that the financial institutions in Singapore were unable to capitalise on the huge opportunities and potential demand because of their limited resources, forcing them to concentrate on larger markets instead. They were, however, confident that the industry could grow more rapidly if there were more concrete support for this sector.
