A resident: Changing of Town Council management is a waste of resources; Town Councils should decouple with political parties and become public organisations?

SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan said the Ministry of National Development may wish to establish a set of guidelines for the succeeding Town Council management to follow. He was responding to reader Huang YaXi, who had pointed out in Lianhe Zaobao that every time the political party in a constituency changes, time and money are wasted with the replacement of the Town Council's management, contractors and infrastructure, among other things. Hence, Huang had suggested that Town Councils should become public organisations so that elected MPs would have more time to focus on the electorate’s welfare. Assistant Prof Tan was of the opinion that while the suggestion to decouple politics from Town Councils was worth exploring, the PAP is not ready to do so as there are no comparable talents available to take the place of the MPs. He commented that the rotation of political parties seen in the last two years would continue to occur, and that it was important that a balance be maintained during the handover process so that the electorate’s welfare would not be compromised.
