Undergrads pick chicken rice as food that best represents Singapore

Four NTU students, in a bid to find out which food best represented Singapore in the hearts of local undergrads, surveyed over a thousand students from the SMU, NUS and NTU. Chicken rice had 35 per cent of the vote share, followed by chilli crab with 15 per cent, laksa (13 per cent), rojak (eight per cent), char kway teow (five per cent), durian (two per cent) and hokkien mee (two per cent). 88 per cent of the respondents agreed that food plays a part in shaping Singapore's culture and that it is important to preserve the country's food heritage. This poll was done as part of the Tastes of Yesteryear campaign, an initiative to encourage undergrads to appreciate Singapore's food heritage. Besides recording the various types of traditional local foods, the students also made a documentary on local cuisine and culture.
