Young S'poreans pick chicken rice as food that best represents country

Young Singaporeans have chosen chicken rice as the food that best represents the country, according to a poll of university students. Over a thousand students from SMU, NUS and NTU were asked to name a food that best represented Singapore. Chicken rice had 35 per cent of the vote share. It was followed by chilli crab with 15 per cent, laksa (13 per cent), rojak (eight per cent), char kway teow (five per cent), durian (two per cent) and hokkien mee (two per cent). The poll was done as part of the Tastes of Yesteryear campaign, an initiative by four students from NTU, to get people to appreciate Singapore's food heritage. Eighty-eight per cent of the respondents agreed that food plays a part in shaping Singapore's culture and that it is important to preserve the country's food heritage.
