Elections Department will consider changing name of Punggol East to Seng Kang East

On residents’ requests to re-name Punggol East as Seng Kang East, SMU Assistant Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan commented that constituency names did not have any obvious impact on votes. However, as Punggol East was commonly regarded as part of Seng Kang, the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) should take voters’ sentiments into consideration so as to avoid giving the impression of “arbitrary naming.” He added that the EBRC should be formed prior to the 2016 elections. If the boundaries do not change but the name changes, it might make voters more confused and much resources would have to be spent just to change the signs within the constituency.
