MP calls for nurturing of local academia

Senior Minister of State for Education Indranee Rajah said that more than one in two tenured faculty members at SMU, NUS and NTU are Singaporeans, while one in five tenured faculty members at SUTD is Singaporean. In NUS and NTU, about one in four faculty members on the tenure track is Singaporean. In SMU, the figure is one in six; and in SUTD, the figure is one in three. For non-tenured faculty members, about half of them in SMU, NUS, and NTU are Singaporeans. This was a response to SMU Assistant Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan, who expressed his concern about the low ratio of Singaporeans. Assistant Prof Tan also said that he hoped to see universities develop local talent, not as a form of preferential treatment but in providing a level playing field.
