Minister of Transport Lui Tuck Yew said that the Newton MRT station fire was caused by a short circuit, and all the affected cables have since been replaced. In addition, SMRT has been performing tests and enhanced checks on its tunnels. This was in response to a question raised by [SMU Assistant Professor of Law and NMP] Eugene Tan. Mr Lui also stressed that the safety of passengers is of top priority, and that a thorough investigation would be conducted.
