Hwie Tiau Ka Association in East Java organized seminar on Chinese Indonesian identity

SMU Assistant Professor of Asian Studies Chang-Yau Hoon’s book launch for “Chinese Identity in Post-Suharto Indonesia: Culture, Politics and Media” on 23 February 2013 was organised by the Centre for Chinese Indonesian Studies at Petra Christian University, Surabaya. The book is available in Chinese, English and Bahasa Indonesia. In his book, he stressed that the key to living in a plural society like Indonesia is not to reduce or to avoid difference, but to live with and live through differences. He also commented that Indonesia’s Chinese should blend into the mainstream Indonesian society, and not become ‘China-styled’ Chinese. Similarly, the media should publish Chinese newspapers with an Indonesian flavor, rather than China-styled Chinese papers.
