Wage Credit Scheme draws mixed reactions

Under the new Wage Credit Scheme (WCS) aimed at increasing the pay of workers in low-wage sectors, the government will co-fund 40 per cent of wage increases for Singaporean workers earning up to a gross monthly wage of S$4,000. SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan likens the S$4,000 cap to government subsidy under the WCS, as a form of minimum wage, but a system with enough flexibility. He said: "Yes, I have long regarded the Workfare Income Supplement as a form of minimum wage support. The Wage Credit initiative continues that vein of thinking and approach in the government. The impact is similar but the wage credit scheme (prevents) the government from making a paradigm shift with regards to minimum wage."
