On the Population Blue Paper issued by the Workers’ Party (WP), SMU Assistant Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan said that since the Paper had the benefit of hindsight and was written in such a short time frame, it could not really be compared to the Population White Paper. He also noted that it had incorporated elements of the Parliamentary debate and shunned controversial issues so as to earn WP political capital. He added that the Paper was not in-depth in offering solutions, and said that the WP could have released the Paper at this time to ensure that discussion on the population policy would continue before the attention is shifted to the Budget announcement.
