On the Population Blue Paper issued by the Workers’ Party (WP), SMU Assistant Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan commented that the maintenance of a national identity rested on the foundation of having a large enough Singaporean population. He doubted the feasibility of the Paper, and said that it had incorporated concerns of the people while avoiding issues that could garner negative reactions. This, in Assistant Prof Tan’s opinion, appeared to be a strategy employed by the WP to gain political capital.
