One fake marital rape case reported since 2008

SMU Assistant Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan asked in Parliament about the number of fake reports on marital rapes that were made over the past decade. He said that as marital rape is not recognised as a criminal offence in Singapore, it might be disadvantageous to women. In reply, Second Minister for Home Affairs S Iswaran said that marital rape is considered a criminal offence. While a man has marital rape immunity, such immunity lapses when he is separated from his wife, or when a personal protection order or restraining order is taken out against him. Mr Iswaran also noted that only one woman was issued with a severe warning for making a fake marital rape report.
