What now for WP?

Observers are saying that the Workers’ Party (WP) now has to deal with the sobering reality of managing voter expectations after its euphoric high of winning the by-election by 10 percentage points. SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan said that WP has been concentrating on constituency work, something which they believe will win votes. Assistant Prof Tan added: “Given that the WP is the largest opposition in Parliament and you want people to support you, you’ve got to do more. The party is in a building-up mode, they need to attract talent, but right now, the party doesn’t have the competency to come out with policies, (But) they’re not about to throw out the baby with the bathwater, or turf out the PAP. Their approach is to work with the Government – which irritates other opposition parties – and so far, it has worked”.
