More difficult to win voters

On the Punggol East by-election, SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan said that voters in the constituency belong to the sandwiched class and they might argue that the policies rolled out by the People’s Action Party (PAP) were diverging from their aspirations. A desire for change or an opposition voice would make Workers’ Party (WP) appear more attractive to them. "In addition, voters also felt that the policy changes since the General Election have had no effect - property prices are still high, MRT and buses remain crowded, and Singapore still has too many immigrants," he said. He added that WP’s choice of candidate underscored its sincerity and commitment to the voters. "The campaign also saw all WP MPs campaigning in Punggol East, thus giving confidence to the voters that the party wanted to serve there," he added. Looking ahead, Assistant Prof Tan said that PAP will probably find it more difficult to find high-calibre candidates to contest the next General Elections, as the politics in Singapore is becoming more challenging and demanding, especially in the presence of social media, where politicians can be scrutinised.
