Change of heavens in Punggol East – Observers surprised by ruling party’s unexpectedly-low vote margin

SMU Assistant Professor of Law said that the Workers’ Party (WP) has become the top opposition party in Singapore following its victory in the four-cornered fight of the Punggol by-election. It could be a sign that Singapore is gravitating towards a bipartisan political landscape, as the other opposition parties have not been able to challenge the ruling PAP and WP. He predicted that the smaller opposition parties might join forces to curb the powers of WP to ensure that WP would face a three-cornered battle in every constituency it contests at the next General Elections.
