On the significance of the Punggol East by-election, SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan said, “All this suggests that Singaporeans may be yearning for a more vibrant democracy – one in which there are sufficient checks and balances in Parliament. So in many ways, this by-election is also seen as a barometer of Singaporeans’ sentiments towards a multi-party democracy.”
