With wires dangling from the ceiling, exposed pipes and a boarded-up atrium, Rivervale plaza is drawing by-election candidates like bees to honey. All the candidates contesting in the Punggol East by-election have visited the place and most have commented on it. So is all this fuss over the place really necessary and will it score political points? SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan said: “Rivervale Plaza has become a lightning rod for the different parties. For the Opposition, (the mall) is used to show where they think the incumbent has fallen short. (For them) this is what happens when the PAP is in charge, but under them, it’s going to be different. For the PAP, (the mall) is an important symbol that demonstrates their commitment to getting the renovation completed." Assistant Prof Tan added that Rivervale Plaza is not a game changer.
