SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan commented that the Punggol East by-election was a barometer of the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) and Workers’ Party’s (WP) performance. Assistant Prof Tan said that while WP is aware that some people had not been satisfied by their performance of late, it is likely to emphasise how the Government has been making changes since the last election, as the reason for why more opposition members should be voted into the Parliament. He also said that since all four candidates raised similar issues, voters should consider who would be best placed to solve their problems before casting votes. While the PAP has the most resources, voters might not base their decision entirely on that, as seen in the cases of Hougang and Potong Pasir.
