On the Punggol East by-election, SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan said that the party which is able to address both local and national issues well is likely to draw more votes, as national issues often have local manifestations, and local concerns often reflect national priorities and policies. Contesting parties would hence need to listen to the voters and adjust their strategies accordingly. On the Reform Party’s and Singapore Democratic Alliance’s decision to contest in the election, he commented that they both need to manage the public perception that they are hurting the Worker’s Party’s prospect.
