SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan commented that the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) could have pulled out of the by-election as it did not want to risk losing its election deposit. He noted that both the Singapore Democratic Alliance and Reform Party might risk losing their election deposit should they proceed to contest. Pulling out of this election could be a good move for SDP in the long term as voters would not be unhappy with them for “stirring trouble”.
