Education Minister Heng Swee Keat said in Parliament on Monday that Government scholars must fulfil strict academic criteria in order to continue receiving their scholarships. For instance, SMU scholars need to have a minimum GPA of 4 (out of 5), while NUS and NTU scholars must attain at least 3.5 out of 5. Results are assessed every semester to ensure that students continue to qualify for the scholarships. In the past five years, 30% of scholars received first class honours, 35% second upper and 20% second lower. In addition to their academic performance, scholarship holders also need to maintain good conduct.
