SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan commented that Lee Li Lian was an ideal choice for the Worker’s Party as she was familiar with Punggol East. Even though many people felt Gerald Giam had a higher chance of winning, WP stuck to their strategy and fielded Lee Li Lian. This showed that WP did not simply nominate a candidate who had a seemingly higher chance of winning. Assistant Prof Tan felt that it is generally believed that the WP did not field Gerald Giam as it hopes to increase its representation in Parliament. Such a move also showed that WP had plans for Gerald Giam to run for a GRC in the next election. “Furthermore, fielding Lee Li Lian illustrated WP’s capability in grooming young politicians,” he added.
