On Worker’s Party’s (WP) refusal to work with the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan commented that WP is unwilling to let SDP gain a bargaining chip in the next election. While SDP might be able to enhance their image if they claim that they chose not to contest in order to preserve unity among the opposition parties, Assistant Prof Tan said that SDP’s move of making the letter to the WP public was not wise. On the other hand, he commented that Sylvia Lim’s move to withdraw an adjournment on the AIM issue “prevents a tentative closure on the issue” and could give the WP some leverage during its campaign.
