Halimah favoured as candidate for Speaker of Parliament

On the impending nomination of Mdm Halimah Yacob as Speaker of Parliament, SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan said that he is confident that Mdm Halimah’s qualities would be well-received by the Cabinet. Her appointment could inspire women seeking a career in politics, and generate interest in the People’s Action Party among women. It would also send a strong signal that Muslim women wearing head scarves can play a significant role in national affairs, and would result in Singapore having representatives from three major ethnic groups in important Government positions.
