Political commentators said that while it is likely that a by-election will be held in Punggol East, it may not be any time soon. SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan said that political parties keen to run for election would have to prepare themselves, as there is usually only a short window of time between the announcement and elections. He said that by beginning their preparations, the PAP is signalling that it does not have any advantage over its opposition counterparts. It is also sending a message to the opposition parties that they should also start preparing.
