On the Punggol East by-election, SMU Assistant Professor of Law Jack Lee commented that the current situation is similar to that of the Hougang by-election earlier this year, when there was discussion on whether Workers’ Party chief Low Thia Khiang can quit his position in the Aljunied GRC and return to Hougang. The Constitution did not specify if present MPs are required to resign before they run for a by-election or after they emerge victorious. Hence, Assistant Prof Lee said that choosing a candidate from a GRC is a possible option. If this candidate wins the by-election in Punggol East, he would only need to resign from his current GRC seat. The Constitution specifies that the entire GRC has to be vacated before a by-election can be held.
