SMU Assistant Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan commented on the Punggol East by-election, for which numerous opposition parties have come forward to express their interest in running. He said, “They are unwilling to dismiss the possibility of running for the election at this preliminary stage; announcing their interest is a way of gauging the voters’ response.” Assistant Prof Tan added that opposition parties would need to discuss which candidates to field to gather more votes. “They are aware that the PAP would have a higher chance of winning if their negotiation fails and each opposition party field their own candidate; they will also lose their election deposit.”
