Seventeen staff members of KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) have been disciplined, warned or counselled in the aftermath of the baby-mixed up last month. SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan said that organisations like the Armed Forces and hospitals have to be “very, very mindful of complacency, simply because they do affect people’s lives in potentially significant ways”. “I don’t think we can ever expect a perfect system. But that doesn’t mean we should settle for mediocre standards,” he said. Assistant Prof Tan added that over-reliance on the systems and processes that are in place can also contribute to the rise of incidents like the KKH baby mix-up, and that adding additional layers of checks may potentially worsen the problem.
