On SMRT's dialogue with the bus drivers regarding their pay, SMU Assistant Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan commented that while he understood that SMRT needed to pay workers' levies and dormitory rentals for its PRC employees, the company’s offer to allow these drivers to convert a portion of their annual leave into cash and to give out the $275 housing subsidy in cash were not addressing their concerns since no adjustments would be made to their base salaries. He cautioned that if not properly handled, SMRT would have difficulty recruiting bus drivers from China in future.
