SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan commented that as the source of foreign workers become more diverse and since foreign labour makes up one-third of the workforce, there is a need for industrial relations policies to change. As of now, Singaporeans have become used to regarding foreign labour as tools for filling in labour gaps, and employers tend to pay them lower wages in order to make higher profits. Citing SMRT as an example, Assistant Prof Tan explained how the company had neglected exercising flexibility in handling such relations.
