Political observer and SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan commented on the general election of the Workers' Party CEC. He said that it makes little difference whether Mr Chen Show Mao is given a special portfolio at the subsequent CEC election of the Party as he is already a Member of Parliament and is rather influential both inside and outside of the Party. In fact, having a new portfolio might hinder Mr Chen's influence and focus on discharging his MP duties well. Furthermore, he is considered quite junior in terms of his involvement with WP. The WP leadership could be of the view that letting the younger, non-MP members take on key posts in the CEC would enable them to better judge who would be good candidates for leadership renewals in the future.
