The divided reaction to Feng Tianwei's Olympic win has highlighted mounting friction over immigration. Much of it is focused on the wave of mainland Chinese immigration that has landed in Singapore over the past two years. Paradoxically, most of Singapore's Chinese population are descendants of immigrants from China. “Immigration is the big thing now,” said SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan. “It impacts everything: property prices, rental, the cost of living and the sense of belonging and what it means to be a Singaporean.”
