At a Parliament seating, SMU Assistant Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan enquired whether the proposed changes to the legislation will be sped up, and how the rights of the 35 persons currently on the death row will be protected. He was concerned that they may receive inaccurate information on the proposed legislation, which may give rise to false hope. To this, Minister K Shanmugam responded that they are all represented by lawyers, and that the authorities will communicate with these inmates and their lawyers to explain the proposed changes. Lawyers should also not mislead their clients.
