SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan commented that in the past, politics was followed mainly by politicians. With an increased level of education among our voters, more people are now concerned about how the country is being run, and are making their political views heard. However, a higher education level does not equate to a greater understanding of politics. He said that some people misinterpreted the recent increase in political awareness as political maturity. On the topic of exposing children to politics from young, Prof Tan shared that at the age of 10, he had considered rallies he attended with his father to be ‘entertaining'. Prof Tan said that the government has a role to play in political education, including improving on its explanation of policies and their implications to the public-at-large.
