US Sinologist, Professor Ezra Vogel, who was in Singapore last week to deliver a Ho Bee Professorship in Chinese Economy & Business public lecture at SMU, was of the opinion that although anti-graft sentiments among the Chinese public are high at the moment, it is unlikely that the crackdown on student-led democracy protests, which took place at the Tiananmen Square on 4 June 1989, would recur. He pointed out that the state of development in China today is drastically different from that of 23 years ago and both the Chinese government and the students have drawn much experience from the episode. Compared to 23 years ago, China is considered a reasonably affluent nation and the standards of living have improved significantly. Although the inflation rate remains high, it is relatively low compared to the 30% then.
