SMU Assistant Law Professor Eugene Tan was of the opinion that in the nine days of campaign, the two parties have adopted strategies that most suit them. However, it was also natural for both sides to change direction at the later stage. For example, PAP has switched from discussing only localised issues to national issues and WP has shifted from national issues to upgrading issues in the ward. He said that WP might have realised in the last minute that competitions between the two parties have heated up and hence shifted their focus on upgrading issues. He felt the upgrading issues will impact the next General Election which will lead voters to question why they should continue to vote for WP.
