Prominent American Sinologist Professor Ezra Vogel is of the view that if Xi Jinping, heir apparent to the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, and the other standing members of the Chinese Politburo are able to achieve consensus and act in unison after the 18 th National Congress of the Party (18 th CPC), then they will be able to leverage the centralised power of the state to roll out more anti-corruption measures or push the boundaries for democracy. Although this new Chinese leadership might not be able to undertake major reforms like the late Mr Deng Xiaoping, it is still capable of achieving some progress. Prof Vogel expressed his view at a press conference held at SMU yesterday. He was invited to deliver a public lecture on ?The Legacy of Deng Xiaoping? as SMU Ho Bee Professor in Chinese Economy and Business (2012).
