The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) has withdrawn its appeal against a court decision to hear a Hougang resident's bid for a by-election to be called in her constituency. It did this on behalf of the Government because 'there is no substantive controversy that can legitimately be the subject of proceedings before the Court', the AGC said in a statement yesterday. Constitutional lawyers noted that the court tended to hear only cases with a real controversy at stake. SMU Assistant Professor Jack Lee shared that it was now harder to convince the court to hear the case: 'But the court may say there are legal issues to clarify and take the opportunity to do so.'
