SMU Assistant Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan was among some political analysts to comment on the Hougang by-election on May 26. Prof Tan said that the timing would not make a difference to PAP's electoral battle and dragging it out will take away some goodwill for PAP. Prof Tan noted that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong would not want the Hougang by-election to be a "source of distraction" now as the Government tackles hot button issues such as housing, foreigners and transport and that WP will probably attribute the significant changes in Government policy to its increased presence in Parliament.
