SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan commented that the political landscape was ?not vastly different' from the past despite the fact that the opposition now occupies one in ten seats in Parliament ? its largest presence since 1968. The fundamental policies remain in place even as debate is encouraged and tweaks are made to assuage voters' angst, anger and anxieties. The atmospherics have changed, though. More consultation, the use of social media, politicians emoting more, and a subtle shift away from the austere social compact we are more familiar with. Over time, he said that policies would be ?right-sized' in response to the electorate's concerns, angst and anxieties. He opined that we can expect more robust debates and a more engaged electorate that is also assertive and more demanding.
