Associate Professor Michael Benoliel of SMU Lee Kong Chian School of Business observed that Asians tend be more passive as compared to the Westerners when it comes to negotiating remuneration packages. More often than not, they dare not lay down their terms. This reflects the oriental culture, which emphasizes on showing due respect to others, especially those who are older or of seniority. As a result, potential Asian employees are often unwilling to state their desired salary package for fear of offending the hiring supervisors or being perceived as overly demanding.
