Social media experts were not in favour of an online code of conduct. SMU law lecturer and NMP Eugene Tan said that the Sedition Act, the Penal Code, and the Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act were there to deal with transgressions. Additionally, Internet service providers and content providers must comply with the Media Development Authority's (MDA) Internet code of practice, which prohibits any material glorifying, inciting or endorsing ethnic, racial or religious hatred, strife or intolerance.
