Commenting on Hougang MP Yaw Shin Leong's abrupt resignation from the executive council of the Workers Party (WP), SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan said that among the WP's new generation of leaders, Yaw was tasked to defend the parliamentary seat in Hougang (a single-ward constituency) due to his outstanding performance. His resignation from the Party's leadership would surely affect its succession planning, but this does not mean that his political future is doomed. Dr Tan added that although the Opposition Parties (specifically WP and the Singapore People's Party) have been embroiled in controversies of late, the negative impact and damage to their credibility should not be over-emphasised, as voters are unlikely to confuse personal issues with political ones.
